In 2014, many of you chose to support a little magazine—independent, volunteer-powered, quirky, printed on real paper with real ink, and centered around art and faith.
Let me tell you, this was a gutsy choice.
We're not a glossy magazine or fancy website promising abs of steel or the perfect home decor or six steps to financial success. Quite the opposite. Our gifted writers and artists are asking questions and discussing poverty, hard truths, messy life, and beauty that is complex and worth fighting for. We're often whispering in a world that is shouting. Or crying out in a world too silent.
This is why your choice matters so much. You are listening, watching with us.
You may have noticed that we didn't publish a fall issue this year. Our staff needed to rest and recharge. This was a scary decision. I was afraid we'd lose momentum, that our subscribers would be miffed, that people would write us off or call us flaky. None of this happened. Instead, we came back to the magazine with more energy and clarity—and gratitude for each of you.
Ruminate currently has an average of 500 paid subscribers, 14 monthly donors, and 20 one-time donors. Yet, we receive over 5,000 writing and art submissions each year, our website has an average of 4,000 visitors each month, and
there are over 7,000 people signed up to receive our monthly email newsletters. You can see how these numbers are skewed. A critical part of our work in 2015 is going to be balancing these numbers. We are excited and ready to take on this task with new energy because we know we have you all, our readers, supporting us.
Thank you for believing that little and quirky is just fine, independent publishing matters, print is not dead, the short story is not dead either, poetry is for everyone, and art and literature are life-giving. Please, make the same gutsy choice this year and support Ruminate in 2015. Renew your subscription.

And if you've already done one or two or all three of these things—thank you! It is a brave choice!
